Atoms & Bits | MoCap Experiments
IH: Since the Displacement Doorway project, we’ve continued experimenting with motion capture using a Kinect2. These are two experiments, one was a quick test I did at my desk, and the other is a dance performance.
Instead of a standard point cloud (dots), we rendered the environment as a point cloud composed of letters. In one example, we used a live news feed, and in the other, the lyrics of a song. The idea was that the digital avatars would be formed by text. The quick example at my desk worked a bit better in terms of visibility of the letters. We tried changing the settings for the performance video but it was difficult to capture it well given various technical and logistical constraints, including the fact that I have a PC and Nazia has a Mac (install didn't work!), and also that we’re based in different locations so had to work remotely. We ended up using a Mini PC as a passthrough, with the Mac recording via a capture card.
Still, it was a great performance. Special thanks to dancer Vijayanthi Vadrevu who kindly gave up a Saturday afternoon to help us :)
